Your Left Side was written after Jamie was chatting to a man who had suffered a stroke. He said the saddest thing was that when he lost the use of his left side, he also lost the ability to hold onto the one he loved when he danced. Shortly after this conversation Jamie fell near Leeds bus station. He says, falling as an overweight adult, it hurts, it shudders you right to your bones. He landed on his left hand, and the thought passed through his mind about not being able to hold onto anyone again.
This thought was interrupted when he remembered he was laid in the middle of the road, and that the group of men that are always stood around there had come over to help him up.
Their kindness shook him and made him feel guilty that he had always avoided them in the past. This single brings together these circumstances, concentrating on the idea that everyone is scared and everyone is kind.
Sonically this track was built up using loops of an old Vox Jaguar organ that Jamie recorded on his phone. He sampled sounds from the main guitar and vocal parts onto 80s 4-bit samplers to make out-of-time loops to play around with the lyrics over the top. The track is brought back together by a big drum fill and it all combines into the chorus.

These men I avoid, and am afraid of, helped me. The top half of his face is normal, tired but normal, in proportion. All items of value have been removed. The hand you used to hold at the dance. Everyone’s scared and everyone’s kind. Outside the Denison Hall I overheard him say – Nothing, I’ve got the radio on in the background – to someone he must love enough to lie to. Everyone’s scared and everyone’s kind. Oh god you’ve lost your left side.
